Johan SVENSSON was the son of Sven JONASSON (1820-1888) and Nilla JÖNSDOTTER (1824-1907). He was born on 15 April 1856 in Bökhult, Pjätteryd, Kronoberg, Sweden. In 1877, he went to North America and settled in Utah.
In the United States, he changed his name to John Sanstrum. He worked as a miner, and moved around where the work took him. In Colorado, on 7 August 1885, he married Maren Katrine NIELSEN in Fort Collins, Larimer County. They were joined by his brother Nils Gustaf, in 1886. John and Nils worked out of Park City, Summit County, Utah in the silver mines.
John and Katie, as she called herself, had four children, two sons and two daughters. The oldest son died at the age of six.
In 1896, John was involved in a mining accident. He was taken to Saint Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he died on 11 October 1896 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. His body was returned to Park City, where he was buried.
