Biography

Sweden
Jonas Svensson lived in Sweden.
Jonas Svensson was born in 1807 in Elmesås Söregård, Moheda,[1] Kronoberg, Sweden. No record has been found of the exact date. His parents were Sven Fredriksson and Stina Jonasdotter, and he was the only boy of six children.[2]
He and his family moved from Moheda to Hölmö Norregård, Skatelöv (not very far, but a different parish in Kronoberg, Sweden) in 1817, when he was about 10 years old.[2] The current church in Skatelöv Parish was built in 1820–1821, when Jonas was around 13 years old. One can imagine that provided some excitement.

Around the age of 25 he first married Marta Persdotter 28 Mar 1832[3]. Marta Persdotter had previously had a son with a Sven Nilsson (Jonas, b. 1827)[4][5]
Jonas and Marta had one son together, Peter Jonasson, born 18 Sep 1832[6] Marta Persdotter, listed as a farmwife, died in early Jan, 1835[6][7]
At the time of Jonas' second marriage, to Marta Magnusdotter, there was a note made in the marriage record, referring to his finances, because of "his previous marriage and a child. He produced estate inventory and paper about the inheritance and signed by the guardian of that child."[8]
Jonas married Marta Magnusdotter 19 Jun 1836. Her father was present and gave oral approval to the marriage.[9] They married in Vislanda, Kronoberg, where Marta was from, but she returned with Jonas to Hölmö Norregård in Skatelöv Parish. Five years later, in 1841, Jonas' father Sven Fredricksson passed away[10], and as the only male, Jonas inherited the family farm. There was no shortage of people to take care of it.
Between the years 1838 and 1858, Jonas and Marta Magnusdotter had 10 children, nine of whom survived to adulthood (Carl and Magnus were twins, Carl only lived a few months):
  1. Olof Jonasson Holmquist[11]
  2. Johannes (John) Jonasson[12]
  3. Gumme (Gust) Jonasson[13]
  4. Johan Jonasson[14]
  5. Johanna Jonasdotter[15]
  6. Carl Jonasson[16]
  7. Magnus Jonasson[17]
  8. Carolina Jonasdotter[18]
  9. Charles Jonasson[19]
  10. Christina Jonasdotter[20]
In the 1860s many of his children began to emigrate to the United States, driven away by the Swedish economy and famine.[21] One son, Johan, remained to work the farm, but the farm wasn't enough to sustain more, at that time. Olof was the first to go, in 1861 at the age of 22, then Johannes, age 24 in 1864 followed by Gumme (Gust) a year later, age 23. Then Magnus and Carolina on the same ship in 1866. Magnus was 18 and Carolina was 15[22]. Carl (Charles), 15, left in 1869 and August (AJ), age 14, left in 1870.[23]. Although the last were much younger, they did have siblings waiting for them at the other end.
Jonas died on September 26, 1879 in Hölmö Norregård, Skatelöv, Kronoberg, Sverige[24] He was survived by ten children, Petter Jonasson in Hölte Gällaryd parish, by his first wife Marta Persdotter, and Johan, Johanna, Olof, Johannes, Gumme, Magnus, Carl and August, all of legal age by 2nd wife Marta Magnusdotter, and Christina, "Not of age". They were all listed in his probate, a copy of which is in family possession.
In 1880, his widow Marta and their youngest, Christina, age 22 emigrated to North America, leaving Johan Jonasson Holmkvist (his surname was modernized along with his siblings) in possession of the family farm.[25]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jonas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jonas:
