Biography

Frances Swaby was born in 1830 in Holton Le Clay, Lincolnshire, England to John Swaby and Martha. She was christened in Holton Le Clay on 7 Mar 1830.[1]

In 1841 Frances Swaby (age 11) lived at High Street in Waltham, Lincolshire with her father John (55-59), mother Martha (55-59), and four siblings: Martha (20-24), John (15-19), Mary (15-19), and George (14).[2]

In 1851 Frances Swaby (age 21) lived at High Street in All Saints, Lincolnshire with her father John (67, Farmer of 70 Acres), mother Martha (69), and brother John (27).[3]

Frances Swaby married George Markham in 1853. The marriage was registered in Caistor, Lincolshire in the second quarter of the year.[4]

Frances and George had eleven (or twelve) children: Swaby Markham (1853-1853), William Frederick Markham (1855-), John Arthur Markham (1857-), George Walter Markham (1860-1932), Alice Ann Markham (1862-), Ruth Fanny Markham (1863-), Phoebe Jane Markham (1865-), Tom Ernest Markham (1867-1868), Tom Raynor Markham (1869-), Rose Emma Markham (1871-1878), and Franze Ernest Markham (1876-1876). The potential twelfth child is Leonard Markham (1881-1959) - his birth was registered with mother's maiden name Markham, and he is young enough that he was most likely a grandchild that Frances raised as her own.

In 1861 Frances Markham (age 31) lived at New Road in Waltham with her husband George (31, Bricklayer) and three sons: William F (5, Scholar), John A (3), and George W (1).[5]

In 1871 Frances Markham (age 41, Housewife) lived in Waltham with her husband George (41, Bricklayer) and seven children: William F (15, Apprentice), George W (11), Alise A (9, Scholar), Ruth F (7, Scholar), Pheoby G (5, Scholar), Tom R (2), and Rose E (0).[6]

In 1881 Frances Markham (age 51) lived at New Road Private in Waltham with her husband George (51, Builder & Contractor) and four children: Alice Ann (19, Dressmaker), Ruth Fanny (17, Pupil Teacher), Phoebe Jane (13, Scholar), and Tom Rainer (12, Scholar).[7]

In 1891 Frances Markham (age 60) lived at New Road in Waltham with her husband George (61, Builder), two daughters: Ruth F (27) and Phoebe J (25), [grand?]son Leonard A (9), and visitor Helen Rudham (60).[8]

Frances' husband George Markham passed away in 1892.

In 1901 Francis Markham (age 71) lived at Hennrietta Street St Helier in Hurst, Lancashire with her [grand?]son Leonard (22, Bricklayer Journeyman) and niece Sarah Eth Saddaly (38, Dressmaker).[9]

At some point, Frances Markham immigrated to Australia (as did some of her children).

Frances Markham passed away on 15 Oct 1917 in New South Wales, Australia. She is buried at Woronora Memorial Park in Sutherland, New South Wales (same gravestone as her son George Walter Markham).[10]
