Marriage
Charles married Augusta U. Cocker (1833-1915) a daughter of barrister, Edward Cocker on 10 August 1858 in the parish church of Nettlebed, Henley, Oxfordshire, England. [5] He is recorded as a Captain of the 31st Regiment of Foot as his occupation on the marriage license. [6]
Children
They had 4 Children:
Stillborn daughter b 26 Dec 1861 in Colchester, Essex. He has the rank of Major on the newspaper announcement in The Sun.[7]
Charles joined the British Army, 31st Regiment of Foot, as an Ensign, then purchasing his commission as a Lieutenant in January 1848. [15] He purchased his further promotion to Captain in 1850 [16]
In 1851, he is residing with his parents at West Down Lodge, Wyke Regis and is now listed on the census as an Army captain. [17]
Charles was promoted in the army to Major, without purchase, in 1858. [18] In 1861, he was posted as Major, 31st Regiment of Foot to the Depot Battalion. [19][20][21][22] His final rank was as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 31st Regiment of Foot in the British Army. He retired as Brevet Lieutenant Colonel on half pay pension in August 1872, this meant he was advanced a rank, but not by pay or authority to Colonel and he was thus referred to as, Colonel Swaffield. [23][24]
Charles was made a Justice of the Peace (JP) in Dorset on 20 October 1868 at the Dorset Quarter Sessions chaired by Lord Portman in the Shirehall, Dorchester, [25] and he was made a Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of the County. On the 1871 census, he is a shown as a Lieutenant Colonel, landowner and JP. [26] He appears on Jury Lists in the 1870s, qualifying as a freehold landowner, for example, in 1873. [27]
In 1875, he is shown in the Post Office Directory for Dorset residing at Wyke House, Weymouth; the property of his great grandfather, John Swaffield (1732-1825) purchased many decades earlier. [28] In the 1880 Kelly's Directory, he is listed as a Colonel living at Wyke House. [29]
Charles is not with the family on the 1881 census. Augusta and two children are living in Wyke House, Wyke Regis and she is shown as 'wife of a Lieut. Col in the Army'; I presume he is away on service. [30]
Death
Charles passed away on 20 April 1891, as shown on the probate registry. He is described in the probate index as being Charles James Owen-Swaffield formerly Swaffield late of Wyke Regis and who died in Florence, Italy. Unusually, probate being granted on the date of his death to his widow, Augusta Owen-Swaffield at the Principal Registry, London; Estate valued at £3,386 7s 10d. [31] and probate being reported in the press. [32][33][34]
