Adelaide Mary Anne Owen was born on 11 December 1835 in Avranches, Manche, Basse-Normandie, France as a daughter to Robert Hassell Swaffield DL JP (1797-1870) and his wife, Eliza Mary Josephina Orton (1805-1873) She was christened with three of her siblings, aged 6 yrs in St Paul's Church, Weymouth Dorset, England on 1 January 1842. Her baptism entry clearly states she was born 11 December 1835 in Avranche, France. [1][2][3]
(In her family, the surname was originally Owen, then legally changed to become Swaffield for her parents to acquire an inheritance and later her father became Owen-Swaffield. Adelaide was born an OWEN, in 1840 she became Miss SWAFFIELD and then on her marriage she became Mrs Otway)
Adelaide married Captain Edward John Otway Esq . (1824-1881) (Scots Fusiliers Guards, later 6th Regiment of Foot) on 12 July 1860 in Leamington Priors, Warwickshire. He was the son of Admiral Sir Robert Waller Otway Bt. GCB. Adelaide then became styled as Mrs Adelaide Otway. [4][5][6]
The marriage was announced in the Morning Herald (London) on Monday 16 July 1860 and in a range of provincial papers. [7] [8][9][10] [11]
The census of 1841 shows her with her family in Wyke Regis, Dorset. [12] In 1851, she is now Miss Swaffield, living with her family in West Down Lodge, Wyke Regis. [13]
In 1861, as newly married she and her husband are in Melcombe Regis, Dorset. [14] She and her husband attended a fashionable ball in 1864 at the Royal Hotel, Weymouth. [15]
Her husband died in 1881 and she was the sole executrix. He was buried 24 February in Wyke Regis. [16]
In both 1891 and on the 1911 census, widowed, she is living at Wyke Cottage, Wyke Regis with her sister, Harriet Lewis Swaffield and two servants. [17][18] She is on the electoral roll throughout the 1900s, in 1910 for example at 105 Abbotsbury Road, Wyke Regis. [19] On the 1901 census she and sister Harriet are staying at a private hotel, Hanover House, St Peter's Road, Bournemouth. [20]
Adelaide died in October 1916 in Weymouth, Dorset, England aged 80 and was buried on 7 October in Wyke Regis (All Saints Church); at the time she was living in Wyke Cottage, Wyke Regis. [21] [22]
Her estate was valued at £13,816 and probate was sworn to her brothers, George and Alfred. The register entry describes her as a widow. [23] [24]
I can't locate her in 1871, or on the 1881 census. Her husband is with two servants at 3 Clarance Cottage, Portsea, Hampshire in 1871's census, so maybe she is visiting relatives? [25]
