Sidney Henry Owen was born 25 May 1837 in Avranche, France. He was the son of Robert Hassell Owen Rob Swaffield and Eliza Orton. (His father later changed the surname by deed poll.) He was christened in St Paul's, Weymouth, Dorset, England on 1 January 1842 [1][2] [3][4]
(In his family, the surname was originally Owen, then legally changed to become Swaffield for his parents to acquire an inheritance and later his father became Owen-Swaffield. George was born Owen and became Swaffield.)
In 1947, he with his siblings are named in the High Court action of Swaffield v Orton. [5]
He joined the British Army in 1855 and was stationed in Ireland before being posted to India. He is shown in Ireland on the Army List. [6]
Sidney was a Lieutenant in HM's 51st Regiment of Foot and was on army service in East India when he passed away, aged 20 and as a bachelor.
He died on 1 May 1858 in Kurrachee, East India. [7] His father Robert Hassall Swaffield (of West Down Lodge, Wyke Regis, Weymouth) was granted administration over his estate.[8] His estate was valued as under £200. He was unmarried.
A commemorative plaque to George is mounted on the wall in All Saints Church, Wyke Regis, Dorset. It reads, Sacred to the memory of Lieutenant Sidney Henry Swaffield, 51st (King's Own) Light Infantry. Died of fever at Kurrachee, East Indies, on 8th May 1858, aged 20. It goes on to record he is the fourth son of his parents and that the plaque was erected by officers and men of his regiment to honour him. They had also erected a tomb over his remains in India. [9]
Death notices were printed in several local English papers to record his death in Ghysee, Kuracheee, Bombay, East India. [10][11][12][13][14]
