Biography

Mary Jane Virginia Swaim Porter (1833–1865) was the mother of the prolific and popular short story writer who published in newspapers and magazines most commonly under his best-known pseudonym "O. Henry." [1]

Mary Jane was college-educated and on April 20, 1858 she married Dr. Algernon Sidney Porter (1825–1888), a physician. Their later famous son William Sidney Porter was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. [1]

When William was three, his mother Mary Jane died from tuberculosis, and he and his father moved into the home of his paternal grandmother.
