In 1675 an armed conflict between the Indian inhabitants of various New England locations and the colonists broke out. Colonial militia and Indian raiding parties spread over Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Maine but in late 1675 a concentrated effort was targeted at Narraganset, Rhode Island culminating in the attack on the main fort and later called the 'Great Swamp Fight'. In little more than a year at least 12 colonies were destroyed and more were damaged with the economies of Plymouth and Rhode Island colonies all but being ruined. More than half of New England's towns had been attack.[6]
During the conflict and war Major Samuel Appleton (1625-1696) of Ipswich, Massachusetts led about 600 men members of the Massachusetts militia to attack the Indian Narragansett fort in Rhode Island. A list of Major Sam Appleton's soldiers who were either slain or wounded in the 'Great Swamp Fight' on the 19 December 1675 at the Indian's fort at Narraganset included Lieutenant Jeremiah Swayne.
Indian Deed of Lynn. "Salem records, dated 4 Sep 1686, deed from [Native American] Indians in the territory now constituting Lynn, Lynnfield, Nahant, Saugus, and Swampscot, and parts of Danvers, Reading and South Reading. At the time this deed was given in reality not a 3rd of the territory was occupied by the settlers; but there was a prospect that it would presently come in use. The [Native American] Indians had mostly retired, and it was important that their title, if any existed, should be extinguished." [8] When town deeds were negotiated and executed in March 1689, Mr. John Browne, Capt. jeremiah Sweyn, and Leiut. William Harsey, acted as trustees and prudentials for ye towne of Reading, during these transactions..." [8]
