Hi Susan,

I noticed that you're working on pre-1700-era profiles. This is just a reminder that certifying to work on these types of profiles means that you agree to add valid sources as outlined in the Pre-1700 Certification Quiz. It is important to not only use a valid source, but to also provide a complete citation for that source so that others can find it and know what information it provides. While birth and baptism records can be great sources, "Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950" is not a complete citation. The help page for sources has some great information on sourcing, and also some example citations. You can find the help menu on the upper right side of the page, or here is a direct link: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources

Also, it is a good idea to provide birth and/or death location on your profiles, because it provides more complete information about the person and helps prevent duplicate profiles. Since you are creating profiles using birth and/or baptism records from Scotland, the people must have lived there. If you aren't sure whether they were born there, you can give Scotland as a birth location and mark it uncertain.

Thank you,

Paige

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz, Susan!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Sources are very important here on Wikitree, especially on Pre-1700 profiles. It is how we show where we got the info and helps others find it too. Find out more about Pre-1700 Profile sourcing here and source citation info here.

The England project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members. The England Project has a very useful, self-directed course called The Orphan Trail that will help you learn a lot about sourcing and creating profiles.

Hello and welcome to WikiTree!

The initial email from us has helpful links that will get you started on WikiTree, which is not like any genealogy site you’ve ever used.

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person, and that means we all work together as a BIG collaborative team!

What brings you to WikiTree? Do you have research you’d like to share? Are you interested in how your family fits into the big tree? You will soon get an email from us that will have some great links to get you started on WikiTree. When you confirm your email address, you’ll have an option to volunteer to add new information to WikiTree. At that time you may also be asked to add tags to your profile. (Tags are surnames, locations, concepts, etc. that you'd like to track.) .Once you volunteer, myself or another one of our Greeters will be happy to confirm your membership, and you’ll be on your way! Feel free to contact me anytime.

Welcome to the family! We’re really glad you’re here.
