Following the death of Prudence on 24th July 1838 at sea, it is believed her son was adopted by a free woman on board the “John Renwick”. Patience Swain (nee Wright) was on board the vessel with her four children (Mary Ann, George, Samuel and Elizabeth), on the way to NSW to join her convict husband Samuel Swain who arrived in 1833 aboard “Mary III”. It is thought she adopted Edward Jenkins and his name was subsequently changed to James Swain; his death is recorded in the NSW BDMs as James Swain, son of Samuel and Patience Swain, died 1884 at Tamworth NSW[1]
