Biography

Born Jane was born in 1875 ^[1] and baptised together with her sister Mary Ann on 11 August 1875 in Pilsley ^[2]. She was the daughter of John Swain and Hannah Cooper.

In 1881 ^[3] Jane (5) was living with her parents, John (36) "Labourer" and Hannah (29) in New street Morton together with her siblings John (12), Mary Ann (7), William (3) and Robert (3 weeks).
In 1891 ^[4] Jane (16) was "domestic servant" at the Star Inn, Main Street, Shirland, Chesterfield, Derbyshire run by George Mosley (44) and his wife Elizabeth.
In 1894 Jane's daughter Lily was born; father unknown ^[5]. At some stage before 1901 Lily went to live with her aunt, Mary Ann, who had married George Swain in Sheffield.

Marriage Jane Swain (25) of Barton-Blount Derbyshire married Sam Oakley (27) "Potter" of Brampton on 2 July 1900 at St Thomas Brampton ^{[6] [7]}; banns were read in Bolsover on 10, 17 and 24 June 1900 ^[8].
Jane and Sam had following children:

In 1911 ^[15] Jane (35) and Sam (38) "potter's labourer" were living at 12 Sherwin Row, Factory St. Brampton Chesterfield together with their children Clifford (9), Leonard (7), Cyril (5) and Edith (1).
In 1921 ^[16] Jane (46) "home duties" and Sam (48) "pottery labourer" were living at 2 Sherwins Row, Factory St, Brampton, Chesterfield together with their children Clifford (19) "Colliery Labourer, Under Ground", Leonard (17) "pottery labourer", Cyril (15) "errand boy", Edith (11) and Herbert (7).
In 1939 ^[17] Jane (64) and Sam (67) "pottery maker retired" were living at 12 Sherwins Row, Factory Street Chesterfield together with their unmarried sons, Robert C Oakley (34) "fish monger's assistant" and Herbert Oakley (26) "gardener's labourer".

Died Jane died age 69 in 1944 ^[18] suddenly on October 30th at 12 Sherwin’s Row, Brampton, Chesterfield, Jane beloved wife of the late Sam Oakley ^[19].
