Biography

Born Agnes was born in 1883 ^[1] and was baptised on 31 March 1884 in Morton ^[2]. She was the daughter of John Swain and Hannah Cooper.
In 1891 ^[3] Agnes (7) "scholar" was living with her parents John (46) "machine fitter" and Hannah (39) in Morton together with siblings William (13) "pony driver (pit)", Robert (10) "scholar", Joseph (8) "scholar", Charley (4) and Gilbert (2).
In 1901 ^[4] Agnes (17) was living with her widowed mother, Hannah (49) in Station Road Morton together with his siblings William Swain (23) "coal (under ground)", Robert (20) "coal (under ground)", Charlie (14) "coal (under ground)" and Gilbert (11).

Marriage Agnes married Charles William Ashton in 1905 ^[5]. Agnes and Charles had six children ^[6]; only five have been identified:

• Doris Muriel Ashton b1911 ^[8]
• Gilbert Cox Ashton b1914 ^[9]
• Annie Irene Ashton b1918 ^[10]
• Bernard Ashton b1923 ^[11]

On 9 April 1906 Chas Wm Ashton (26) “railwayman” of Morton Derbyshire and his Agnes (23) arrived on ms “Merion” from Liverpool in Philadelphia, ^[12]. It is not clear how long they stayed in USA but by mid-1909 they were back in Morton as son Charles Reginald was born there.

In 1911 ^[13] Agnes (27) and Charles (31) "colliery banksman above ground" were living at 569 Station Rd Morton Alfreton Derbyshire together with Charles Reginald Ashton (1).
In 1921 ^[14] Agnes (38) "home duties" and Charles William Ashton (41) “platelayer” were living at 6 Old Fall St, Huthwaite together with their children Charles Reginald (12), Doris Muriel (10), Gilbert Cox (6) and Annie Irene (3). Charles and Doris were born in Morton, Gilbert in Huthwaite and Annie in Tibshelf.

In 1939 ^[15] Agnes (56) and Charles (59) "railway platelayer" were living at 126 Common Road Sutton-in-Ashfield together with their unmarried sons Gilbert C Ashton (25) "railway signalman" and Bernard Ashton (16) "colliery banksman".

Died Agnes died age 64 in 1947 ^[16].

Research Notes

• Date of birth taken from copy of birth certificate issued by GRO on 20 January 2022 was given as 11 June 1883. This differs from the date given on Morton School Admissions which was 15 June ^[17]. The 1939 Register listed 21 August 1883 ^[15].
• The 1911 Census states they were married 5 years and had two children, one alive and one dead. Only the birth registration for Charles Reginald Ashton has been identified in 1909. It would seem possible that the infant that died was born, and died, in USA between 1906 and 1909.
