Priscilla Swaine was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Swaine. She was baptised on 11 February 1799 at St Peter, Derby, Derbyshire, and entered in the parish register as "Priscilla daughter of Samuel & Mary Swaine."[1]
She married William Heaford, a needle maker, on 21 August 1820 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire.[2] He died in February 1823.[3]
She re-married Richard Glover on 22 May 1824 at St John the Baptist in Beeston, Nottinghamshire.[4]
Their eldest child, William, was born in Beeston in about 1825.[5] The couple then returned to Hartshorne, Derbyshire, where the next three children were born: Mary in 1827, John in 1830, and Samuel in 1832.
The family relocated to Leeds, Yorkshire, and the couple's youngest child, Joseph was born there in 1834. Richard Glover kept a tavern called the Mechanics Arms, first in Meadow Lane, Leeds, and then in Balloon Street, Holbeck, a densely populated industrial suburb of Leeds.[6] The air was "loaded with the black vapours which issue[d] from the immense manufactories" and in 1834 Holbeck was considered "one of the most crowded, one of the most filthy, one of the most unpleasant, and one of the most unhealthy villages in the county of York."[7]
In the 1840s they moved again, this time to Liverpool, Lancashire, and the family kept a boarding house at 11 Union Street. Priscilla died there on 24 December 1849, aged 51. Her death certificate records that she was the "wife of Richard Glover boarding house keeper" and the cause of death was a stomach tumor. The informant was John Glover.[8]
