Biography

Mary was born on 18 July 1869 and was baptised on 2 April 1874 (along with her sister Esther) at St. Paul's, Durban, Colony of Natal^[1]. She was the daughter of Christopher Swales and Jane Wright.

Her father was a Coffee Planter of Berea. He died on 25 June 1879.

22 year old Mary married 290 year old brickmaker Joseph James Johnson on 28 May 1890 at St. Mathias' Church, Lower Umgeni, Maritzburg in the Colony of Natal, after Banns^[2].

Her mother Jane died on 10 November 1911.

Her husband died in 1933.

She passed away in 1951 at the age of 82^[3].

Mary was buried at Stamford Hill Cemetery, Durban, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa^[4].
