Biography

George was born in 1856^[1]. He was the son of Christopher Swales and Jane Wright.

He was probably christened on 4 October 1857 at Sowerby By Thirsk, York, England^[2].

At the age of 4 he emigrated with his parents and four siblings from England to South Africa on the ship Durban, arriving on 10 January 1862.[1]

At the age of 22 he married 23 year old Eliza Ratcliff on 9 March 1878 at park Place, D'Urban, Colony of Natal, after Banns^[3]. His occupation was recorded as Brick Maker. The Witnesses were William Henry Ratcliff and Elizabeth Jane Nicholas.

They had at least 10 children.

He passed away in 1915 at the age of about 59.
