Biography

W. Harry Swan was born in Glasgow, Scotland, to Scottish parents in 1875.

He married B. Maude or Kathleen Maude in about 1900. He emigrated to New York in 1907 or possibly earlier.

The 1910 U.S. Census recorded 35-year-old W. Harry Swan in Richmond (Staten Island), New York City, New York, with wife B. Maude, 27, and children G. Henry, 9, and Elise, 3. All had immigrated in 1907. Harry was a journalist for a newspaper.[1]

At the same address in 1910, possibly in another flat in the same house, were Arthur Swan, 30, his wife Thorzad, 26, and children Mary, 7, and Elizbeth, 4. Arthur was a native of Scotland and the others were born in England. They had immigrated in 1909. Arthur Swan was an engineer for a factory.[2]

Harry Swan (middle initial recorded as X) of 230 Riverside Drive, New York City, registered for the World War I draft in New York City on 12 September 1918. He was a citizen of Great Britain, 43 years old, born on 10 June 1875. He worked as a ship repairer for D. M. Nichols Iron Works in New York City. He listed his nearest relative as Mrs. Maude E. Swan of 230 Riverside Drive. He was described as tall and slender, with brown hair and green eyes.[3]

In January 1920 the U.S. Census recorded Harry Swan, 45, at 230 Riverside Drive in Manhattan, New York City, with wife Cathelen, 36, daughter Sheila (or Scheila), 13, and mother-in-law Mrs. Edith Drury, 53. He was recorded as born in Scotland of Scottish parents, while his wife and her mother were born in England to English parents. He and his wife had been married 19 years. He was a manufacturer with his own business. The household included two Irish servants, Delia Kelly, 38 and a cook, and Mary Milligan, 28 and a waitress. Harry Swan was recorded as having immigrated in 1900; he was an "alien."[4]

In September 1938, when British citizen Harry Swan entered the United States through Canada, he was documented as 63 years old and a native of Glasgow, Scotland. He identified his wife as Maud S. Swan, Altamont, Aberfoyle, Perth.[5]
