Mr William George Collington Moore Swan passed away at Wellington on Wednesday at the age of 78. Mr Swan was born on shipboard in the Irish Sea. His father was principal medical officer to the 93rd Argyll and Sutherland' Highlanders. In 1865 the deceased entered the Naval College at Chatham and was later a midshipman on H.M.S. Wolverine, which was stationed in the West Indies. During his service with the Wolverine the deceased contracted yellow fever, and was invalided out of the service. About fifty-five years ago Mr Swan came to New Zealand and joined the Public Works with which he served till he reached the service age limit. The deceased's wife was Helen Spratt, a daughter of Dr. Spratt, of Wairarapa. She predeceased her husband some years ago. Mr Swan was very well known as a collector of Maori and Pacific Island curios, and was said to own the largest and best collection in the Dominion. He was also a devoted Freemason and was for many years an honoured member of Lodge Wellington 1533 (English Constitution). [1]
