Peter Swaney was born in North Ronaldsay, Orkney, Scotland on 26 February 1830 and baptised 18 March 1830. His parents were John Swanie and Mary Swanie.[1] At the age of 22, he migrated to Australia aboard the Omega, sailing from Plymouth on May 29, 1852 and arriving in Adelaide on August 24, 1852. There were no other Swaneys on the passenger list, so we assume he travelled alone to Australia. [2]
In 1860, Peter married Ellen Murphy in Melbourne, Victoria.[3]
Peter clearly intended to make his fortune from the Ballarat (Victoria) goldfields, At various times, he was a shareholder in the William Tell Quartz Mining Co.(1865), Gordon's Consols Quartz Mining Co.(1868), and Southern Champion Gold Mining Co.(1869). On July 5, 1872, however, Peter was declared insolvent. [4]
Peter passed away in Ballarat on March 15, 1873, aged 43 years, from enlargement of the heart, valvular disease, paralysis of left side for 12 months.[5]
