Notes

Note NI1446The Descendants of John and Rosannah Swaney compiled by George E. Beckett.
This family history was prepared for the Swaney Family Reunion of 1982.
Uncle "Lora" was John & Rosa Anna's fourth child and was born in Spring Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, January 30, 1839. He was baptized by Rev. Bernard C. McCabe, rector of St. John's, Erie, Pennsylvania. His sponsors were E.H. Swaney and Jane Swaney. Little is really known about Lora. He spent his early life at Old Mission having staked a claim of 80 acres of frontage on East Bay when just 12 years old. He never married and eventually moved out to Steamboat Springs, Colorado where it is said he owned a boarding house.
Apparently Lora was much like his brother, Chris, in that he was of very large stature. Pete Zimmerman once worked with Lora in a lumbering camp around Lake City. The lumbering companies used to dig holes on the side of their roads to use as fill. Pete said one of Lora's favorite wintertime pranks was to pick a comrade clear off the ground and toss him head first into one of these "sweet holes". The poor victim found himself buried up to six feet in snow!
Lawrence died at Steamboat Springs on October 19, 1912. After his death it is said his brother, James, went out to Colorado to settle his estate. James had the furnishings of the boarding house sent back to Old Mission. There they were divided among the surviving family members. If one were to compare the furnishings in all the various Swaney homes one would find many matching pieces. This of course is because all the rooms in the boarding house were identically furnished.
