Notes

Note NI1447The Descendants of John and Rosannah Swaney compiled by George E. Beckett.
This family history was prepared for the Swaney Family Reunion of 1982.
Emily Basille Swaney was born in Crossingville, Pennsylvania October 25, 1840. She was baptized by Rev. Mr. Pendergast, her sponsors being E. H. Swaney and Jane Swaney. Upon the fami1y's arrival at Old Mission, she soon became friendly with the native Americans and learned their language. She is said not to have ever been afraid of the land's first caretakers. She recalled in the early years on the Peninsula her sisters and she used to grind flour in a little hand mill on her father's farm. When supplies ran short, neighbors also used this mill. On May l2, 1868, she married Richard Day Fox. The ceremony was performed by the bride's brother-in-law, William H. Franklin, Esq. at Old Mission. Pat and Rose Dalton stood up with them. Emily kept a diary of that year (1868) which tells of the many experiences of early pioneer life.
Emily Swaney Fox died at South Milton, Michigan, on November 25,1921 at 11:30 p.m. Funeral services were held at their home on the 28th, Rev. C.W. Chase of Old Mission, a longtime family friend officiated. Richard followed her a few years later.
