Notes

Note NI1451The Descendants of John and Rosannah Swaney compiled by George E. Beckett.
This family history was prepared for the Swaney Family Reunion of 1982.
Manasses S. Swaney was John and Bridget's seventh child. He was born on the 25th of August, 1843 in Spring Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Although a prominent Old Mission farmer, there seems to be very little available information on him. He was baptized by Rev. Mr. Burty and his sponsors were C. Calahan and E. McBride. On December 14, 1879, in Blair Twp., Grand Traverse County, he married Mary Ellen McGarry. She was born in Boyle, Indiana on July 11, 1856 and had come to the Grand Traverse area at the age of twelve. They were married by George W. Tinker, Justice of the Peace and Stephen McGarry and Ann Nichols stood up with them.
It seems the only record existing of Manasses' notoriety is the fact he was one of the original 28 members of the Traverse Area "Old Settlers Association". He died at 56 years of age on the fourth of April, 1900.
Manasses did not, however, leave this world without a final stab at remembrance. In those days it was the custom that several members of the family "sit up" with the dead, that is, stay awake all night in the same room with the body. It being an unseasonable warm night, a window above the table where Manasses was laid was open a crack. Along into the wee hours of the night the men keeping watch started to nod off and tilt back in their chairs. About that time it seems one of the geese Mary Ellen kept decided to stick its neck into the window and let go a horrendous bellow. It was said all three men got stuck in the doorway trying to get out of the room!
