Mrs Thomas Ghering, 82, who was publicly acclaimed Outstanding Mother of the region in 1952 in recognition of her years of service to the area, Died shortly after noon Wednesday, at Munson hospital.
Mrs. Ghering had been stricken with a heart attack Saturday morning at her home on Townhall road, south of Traverse City.
Born Mary Swaney on Feb. 5 1874, at South Milton, Mrs. Ghering was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Swaney, pioneers of old Mission Penninsula.
She attended Traverse City high school and later taught school in Antrim and Grand Traverse counties
On Aug. 31, 1892, she was married to Tompkins Ghering of Old Mission, and together the couple made their home in that area until in 1909 when they purchased the original Zimmerman farm. Later they acquired the Gunton farm south of Traverse City.
Mr. Ghering preceded Mrs. Ghering in death on Oct 25, 1949. The couple celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in August of that year. Mrs. Ghering strived constantly to be of service to others, and in doing so, compiled a long list of accomplishments and memberships in civic and church activities.
During the second World War, Mrs. Ghering spent much time as a Gray Lady in the hospital.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Rose Geary of Kalamazoo, and Mrs. Elizabeth L. McManus of US-31 South: a son, Eugene L. Ghering of R. 1, Williamsburg; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Pickard of Central Lake; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Prayer services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Reynolds funeral home. The Rev. Alvin Doten will Officiate.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday from Ogdensberg Methodist church. The Rev. J C. Matthews will officiate. Internment will be in Ogdensburg cemetary on Old Mission Peninsula.
