Obituary

THE CHARITON HERALD Chariton, Iowa Thursday, November 19, 1903

MRS. JOSEPH WALKER

Charlotte I. Swanger was born August 28th, 1827, at Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. When quite young her parents moved to Ohio, where she lived when she was united in marriage to Joseph Walker in February, 1850.

To this union were born eleven children, three of whom preceded the mother to the home above. In 1855, she and her husband moved to Iowa, on a farm about two miles west of Confidence, where they have since lived until two years ago, when they moved to Russell.

She has been a member of the M. E. church since she was fifteen years of age, and although she has been unable to attend church services very often for a few years, she was one whose every day life displayed one of the truest, most devout christian lives. She was always cheerful and wanted to do what she could in sickness to brighten the lives of those who were shut in.

She seemed as well as usual on the day of her death and walked to the Christian church to attend a funeral. She had only been seated a few minutes when she died without a struggle, on (Thursday) November 12, 1903, aged 76 years, 2 months and 14 days.

The funeral services were held in the M. E. church Sunday afternoon, (November 15) at 1;30 o'clock. Eight children and her husband were left to mourn her loss. One son, at Garfield, Kansas, and a daughter, at Fort Cobb, Oklahoma, were unable to attend the funeral.

The children present were Ambrose Walker, Mesdames Murrow, Harve Scott and J. Brown, of Confidence, Mrs. Jennie Bowers and Miss Inez Walker of this place. The shock was very great and the deepest sympathies of many friends were extended to the bereaved ones.

Swanger-37 and Swanger-97 appear to represent the same person because: I believe the correct birthplace for Charlotte is Mifflin Co, Pennsylvania, I have records that show the family did not leave PA until after 1840
