1860 census
In Union Township (now known as West Chester Township), Butler, Ohio. [2] The instructions to the census taker said, "The names are to be written beginning with the father and mother...to be followed, as far as practicable, with the name of the oldest child residing at home, then the next oldest, and so on to the youngest, then the other inmates, lodgers, and boarders, laborers, domestics, and servants." This household follows that pattern up until the last individual, Mary Tullis, who is older than the oldest child. It is known that there was an older daughter named Mary, who has not yet been found elsewhere in the 1860 census. Although the age of the Mary in this household is a year or two younger than the known Mary, it is being assumed that the two Marys are identical, and her name was placed at the end of the household through an error of the census taker. Further research may prove otherwise.
