James was born in 1923. He was the son of Arthur Swanson and Helen Drake. In World War II he was in the Air Corps with the 305th Troop Carrier Squadron and the 442nd Troop Carrier Group. He was a glider pilot and was shot down in Holland and helped by the Dutch Resistance in 1945. He returned to Ottumwa in 1945. He passed away in 1993.
