During the War of 1812, Benjamin served as a sergeant in Captain William Merritt's Troop of Provincial Light Dragoons. On the Nominal Return document dated 1847-08-17, his place of residence in 1836 was given as "Bayham" and he is said "to have been taken by the Enemy."
