Biography

Mary and Joseph were the grandparents of Reverend Samuel Swayze and his brother Richard Swayze who led their families and a number of the members of the Congregational Church in New Jersey to settle near Natchez, Mississippi in British West Florida in 1773. They became known as the Jersey Settlers.

Joseph married Mary Betts, (daughter of Capt. Richard, of Newtown). [1] These are their known children:

  1. JOANNA, b. 1686 , d. 22 Feb., 1725, at 38, m. 1702, Israel Parshall
  2. JOSEPH, JR., b. 1653, d. Nov., 1786 [NOTE: The birth year shown here appears to be incorrect considering his siblings' birth years]
  3. MARY
  4. SARAH
  5. SAMUEL, perhaps m. Hannah Horten in 1727; 1711-1715
  6. RICHARD, b. 1692, d. Dec., 1782
  7. STEPHEN, m. 1715, Elisabeth Youngs
  8. BETHIA, d. 12 Jan., 1724, in. 1718, Wm. Coleman, Jr.

Joseph passed away about 1734. He was hurried at Old Bethany Cemetery in Mattatuck, Suffolk, Long Island, NY.

What is the source of his birth date? Is there anything besides the unsourced FindAGrave that shows it? The Rufus King Manuscript on the family does not show his birth date.

According to B.F. Swasey's Genealogy of the Swasey Family (1910), Joseph was baptised in Salem, MA Sept 13, 1653. There is no source given. However, there should be a church record of that baptism.

I think it is questionable though as his father sold his house in Salem in 1652. .

I think that referece may be for Joseph, son of Joseph, rather than this profile's Joseph, son of John. On page 42 of the Swasey book, it says that Joseph, son of John was born about 1653 in Southold. https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=2PEUAAAAYAAJ&pg=GBS.PA42&hl=en On page 30 of the same book, it gives Joseph, son of Joseph's birth/baptism as the September 13, 1653 date, in Salem.

I do realize that this source has some reliability issues...

Swazey-132 and Swayze-130 appear to represent the same person because: The profiles seem to agree in all aspects.
