• Grandpa's father was Jonathan Kirk. He, his wife and four youngest children, died of fever within a short time, in Tennessee, when the oldest son, John (Grandpa) was ten years of age.

As she was dying, his mother called John Wesley to her bed and instructed him to do something for her—and told him to never, never tell anyone. He was only ten years of age but he told his family during his last years that he had never told anyone. He seemed to have a high regard for his mother.^[1]
