Biography

William Hart Sweeting was born in Nassau, Bahamas in 1918 to Dr. Charles Cecil Sweeting and Clara May Brunner Sweeting.

He married Isabel Jean Woodall, daughter of Charles Messenger Woodall and Minnie Dick Woodall, a nursing sister at Bahamas General Hospital, 27 April 1947.

William Hart Sweeting was a civil servant - he held the positions of Deputy Governor, Receiver General, Treasurer of the colony, and Chairman of the Bahamas Radio and Television Commission. He was also a founder, along with Sir Bede Clifford, JH Jarrett, Chairman of the Bahamas Broadcasting Corporation, and Mr Kenneth Brown, of ZNS.

In 1969, William Hart Sweeting, Chief Secretary, Bahama islands received a CMG on the occasion of the Queen's Birthday .. "to be Ordinary Members of the Third Class, or Companions of the said most Dintinguished Order." He had received a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Civil Division) in June 1961.

Mr Sweeting was an Elder of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and a member of the church choir for years. He was also a classically trained musician.

William Hart Sweeting died in Nassau 19 December 1994 at 84 years of age. He and his wife, Isabel Jean, are buried in The Western Cemetery.
