Biography

When Henry Sweeting was born[1] [2] on March 7, 1688, in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, his father, Henry, was 25 and his mother, Martha, was 25. He married Esther Brown on December 5, 1708, in his hometown.[3] They had four children in 18 years. He died on October 14, 1756,[4][5] in Providence, Rhode Island, at the age of 68, and was buried there in the North Burial Ground.[6]

The will of Henry Sweeting of Providence, is dated 14 July 1753; it was proved 19 December 1759.[7] It names

  • wife Ester Sweeting
  • sons Job Sweeting and Nathaniel Sweeting
  • daughters Susanah Wright, Esther Dunwell, Penelopy Dilebore, Martha Munroe, Sarah Taft, and Mary Magill
  • grandsons John Sweeting and Henry Sweeting, sons of Henry Sweeting deceased

Executor/executrix were son Job and wife Esther. Witnesses were William Pearce, David Harris, and Richard Waterman.

Research

There is a discrepancy in the death date on the headstone as well as the Rhode Island, Historical Cemetery Commission Index which both show as 24 Nov 1758. But the vital records of Providence and the date of probate being 28 Oct 1756 seem to support the 14 Oct 1756 date as the correct date. In addition to the death date there seems to be a conflict between sources for the birth date of a year. ('68/69) I have changed it to 1669 due to '68 being too soon after his sisters birth.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:
