Biography

Died Y. TO 1850. Tippah, Mississippi, USA.

Following the death of John Slavin of Garrard County, Kentucky, a lawsuit was filed in 1852, in Garrard County, Kentucky, Circuit Court, and in the case file there is a letter from his daughter, Elizabeth Martindale. The letter is posted from Moors X Roads, Tennessee. At the top of the letter it says "State of Tennessee, Hardeman County, May 20, 1839"

She talks about 40 acres of land she has entered about 40 miles "southeast of here". And later says it is in Tippah County, MS.

Of import to this forum, she says, "Dutton Sweeten Serena's husband has bought land down there and will be a near neighbour to me"

In the case petition itself, there is an allegation that Elizabeth Martindale had died, and that she left "Arthusa Richards, Cyrena Sweeten, Elizabeth Kile, Solon Martindale, Theodore Martindale, Tabitha Marshall, Mary A. Martindale and William Martindale her only children.[1]

Cyrena Martindale, however, may have been the wife of Samuel Sweeten. Dutton Martin Sweeten may have had a different Cyrena as a wife.

The marriage record of Dutton M. Sweeten has his wife's name as Serene Anderson, married 19 Jul 1836 in Hardeman County, Tennessee.[2]

In the 1840 Census for Tippah County, Mississippi, Elizabeth Martindale follows the entry for Dutton Sweeten. Dutton has one male under 5, one male 20-30, one female aged 20-30. Elizabeth Martindale has one male aged 10-15, two males aged 15-20, two females aged 10-15, one female aged 40-50. [3]

In the 1845 Mississippi State Census for Tippah County, Dutton M. Sweaton has 5 males and 2 females.[4]
