Biography

Ann was the daughter of Thomas Swettenham and his wife Mary Birtles.^[1][2] She was baptised on 4 April 1607 in Swettenham, Cheshire. The parish register records "Aprilli 4o Anna Swetna[m] filia Thoma Swetma[m] gent et Maria uxoris fuit baptizata."^[3]

She married Richard Davenport of Wheltrough.^[2]

She left a will dated 24 May 1671 describing her as "Ann Davenport of Wheltrough [in] the County of Chester widow".^[4] Her will was proved at Chester in 1671.^[5]

Research Notes

There is inconsistent data in Ormerod:

• The pedigree for Davenport of Wheltough indicates that Abbe Swettenham married Richard Davenport (abt.1625-1684). It states she was "buried Sep. 1678, at Marton."^[6]
• The pedigree of Swettenham of Swettenham records that Anne Swettenham married Thomas Davenport of Wheltrough.^[7]

It appears that she might have actually been the second wife of Richard Davenport (abt.1603-abt.1664). This would be consistent with her birth in about 1607 and being widowed by the time of her death in 1671.

The parish register for the burial of Anne Davemport at Marton, Cheshire, on 19 Sep 1678 states "September 19th Anne the wife of Richard Davemport of [Whel?]trough Buried".^[8] This appears to be the wife of Richard Davenport from the next generation.
