Biography

Obituary reads: "Jean Swift Chism, age 84, of Tompkinsville, died Thursday, August 8, 2013, at home.

Born in Christian County, Kentucky on June 18, 1929, she was the daughter of Reuben H. and Katherine M. Swift, and the wife of the late Tim K. Chism. They were married on Novermber 22, 1952 in Herndon, Kentucky.

She moved to Tompkinsville in 1950 as a Home Extension Agent. She graduated from George Peabody College for Teachers in 1950 and later received her Masters Degree and Rank 1 from Western Kentucky State Teachers College. Mrs. Chism served as a teacher and guidance counselor at Temple Hill School, Tompkinsville High School, Gamaliel High School and Monroe County Middle School for over 30 years. She was active in the Tompkinsville United Methodist Church, Tommie Heilman Cloe Marrs UMW Circle, Campbellsville Emmaus, Daughters of the American Revolution, Monroe County Retired Teachers Association, Monroe County Homemakers Association, Tompkinsville Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Old Mulkey, Friends of the Library, William B. Harlan Library Book Club, and the Chism Family Association. She was an avid reader and family history buff.

Survivors include three children, Timothy "Pat" K. Chism, Jr. and wife Dorothea, Huntsville, Alabama; Dr. James S. Chism and wife, Marcia, Mount Vernon, Kentucky; and Katherine Chism Gordon and husband William, Lebanon, Kentucky; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, four nephews, five nieces and one first cousin.

Visitation will be held at Yokley Trible Funeral Home, starting at 1:00 P.M., Sunday, August 11, 2013, and services to be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 12, 2013, with burial to follow at the Evans-Oak Hill Cemetery, Tompkinsville, KY.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Tompkinsville First United Methodist Church Building Fund, Evans- Oak Hill Cemetery or the American Heart Foundation." [1]
