James was born about 1809 in Bolton, Lancashire, England, son of William Swift and Elizabeth Greenhough.[1] He married Ann Smith in Mottram-in-Longdendale, Cheshire, England on 3 February 1833.[2] He practiced as an engineer in Liverpool.[3][4] However, he died in 1845 at the age of 34 and was buried in Bolton.[5]
