Ellen Swift was born in about 1810 in Eccleston, Lancashire. She was the daughter of William Swift and Elizabeth (Jump) Swift.
By June 6th 1841, they were living in Eccleston. Ellen's father was working as a labourer, as were Ellen's brothers Thomas and Henry.
By March 30th 1851, the family was living in Kill Houses, Eccleston. Besides Ellen's mother, the household contained Ellen's brother Henry - an agricultural labourer - and Ellen herself, who was not in paid employment; Ellen's nephew Roger Eccleston (her sister Ann Mary's son) was also in the household on census night.
