E. J. SWIFT IS DEAD AT HOME AT WOODLAWN.
Former Treasurer of Chautauqua County Suddenly Stricken with Heart Attack.
LONG IN EDUCATION WORK.
School Commissioner and at One Time President of Western N. Y. Association
Emmons J. Swift, who served for nearly 20 years as treasurer of Chautauqua county, died suddenly at an early hour this morning at his home at Woodlawn-on-the-lake, aged 81 years. He was apparently in his usual health at midnight, but later suffered a heart attack, dying almost instantly. Mr. Swift is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Merritt Swift and two brothers, George L. Swift of Forestville and Otis A. Swift of Cresbard, N. D. An only son, Emmons Glazier Swift, young Jamestown attorney, was killed in an automobile accident here May 7, 1927. Mr. Swift was born Feb. 20, 1852 on the Swift family farm in the southern part of Hanover, the eldest of four sons of Joel C. and Frances Glazier Swift. He was educated in the common schools and the Forestville academy, and began teaching at the age of 17, serving as principal of the Cherry Creek, Versailles, Perrysburg, Dayton and Cattaraugus schools for 13 years after which he assumed the duties of school commissioner in the Second Commissioner district of Chautauqua county. He was prominent in school supervision for many years and took an active part in the formation and served at one time as president of the Western New York Association of School Commissioners and City Superintendents, the first body in New York state to use uniform teachers' examinations, which eventually led to the present state educational system of which Mr. Swift was a strong advocate. He declined renomination for the fourth term, after each time being renominated by acclamation, his popularity and efficiency being demonstrated in largely increased majorities at the polls. In November, 1891, in President Harrison's administration, Mr. Swift was appointed one of the 12 United States Internal Revenue agents and assigned to duty in New York city, later being transferred to Greensboro, N. C. in charge of the division including Virginia and North and South Carolina, until resigning at the close of the Harrison administration. He later returned to the Swift homestead in Hanover which has never passed from the family, and when the state liquor tax law was enacted he became the first special agent in the Eighth Judicial district. He served the state in this capacity until October, 1899, when, while he was at work in New York city, and wholly unknown to him, he was selected by the Republican party to fill a vacancy on the county ticket for treasurer. On Oct. 20 he assumed the duties of this responsible office by appointment of Governor Theodore Roosavelt to fill a vacancy which had occurred. He was elected at the November election, continuing in the office for 18 years and retiring Jan. 1, 1918. Mr. Swift married Mary E. Merritt on June 30, 1881. Both Mr. and Mrs. Swift were among the first to pass the state teachers' examinations under the new system and as a result hold life certificates. Funeral services will he held on Monday at 2 p. m. at the family home at Woodlawn, a brief committal service to take place at 4:30 p.m. at the grave in the family plot in Prospect cemetery at Forestville.
