Biography

Joseph Swope has German Roots.

John Joseph Swope, son of German immigrant Hans Ulrich "Joseph" Swope and and Mary (Beckett) Swope, was born 11 August 1751 in Swope Depot, Augusta County, Virginia. As with many early German Americans, he was known most often by his middle name. According to a memorial plaque at Broad Run Cemetery in Wolfcreek, West Virginia, Joseph's father - also known as Joseph - was one of the first settlers in what is now Monroe County, West Virginia.[1]

It is also reported on the plaque and other historical records that Joseph, the subject of this profile, was taken by Shawnee Indians when only five years old. The story relates also that he was captive for nine years.

Joseph reportedly was married twice, first to Catherine Sullivan on 3 April 1774. With her, he had three children born between 1776 and 1788 : George P. Swope born in 1776; Jonathan Arthur Swope born in 1783; and Eleanor Swope born in 1788 and married to John Burdett or Burdette.

Joseph next married Margaret "Peggy" Miller on 14 February 1806.[2] However, the couple reportedly had two children before their marriage : Mary Swope, born in 1784 and married to Fielding Lowe, and James Parker Swope, born in 1797.

Joseph Swope lived out his days in Wolfcreek and passed away on 2 March 1819. His gravestone describes him as "one of the first Setlers of this Country after having been for 9 years a Prisoner with the Shawnee Nation". In this case, as was the custom in that day, the word "country" was sometimes used to mean simply a particular stretch of land. Indeed, the first definition listed by Merriam-Webster is "an indefinite usually extended expanse of land". The inscription on Joseph's gravestone apparently was intended to mean either Monroe County or merely Wolfcreek. His remains lie at rest at Broad Run Cemetery in Wolfcreek.[3]

Best I can remember; from Michael Swopes revolutionary war application he said he was an Indian scout with his brother Joseph Swope and brother John

Swope. His name should only be Joseph.
