Benjamin Sikes[1]was born August 18, 1704[1]at Springfield, Massachusetts,[1]the son of Increase Sikes Jr.[1] and his wife Mary[1](Knowlton) Sikes.[2]

Marriage

On February 24, 1725[3]at Springfield Massachusetts,[3]Benjamin married Hannah Chapin,[3] daughter of Benjamin Chapin[2]and his wife Hannah (Colton) Chapin.[2]Hannah was born October 3, 1706[2]at Springfield, Massachusetts.[2]

Original settlers

Benjamin and Hannah Sikes were some of the original settlers of Ludlow, Massachusetts.[2]The records of Ludlow, Massachusetts indicates that three men were chosen to meet with Benjamin to acquire land to bury their dead.[2]The minutes of March 31, 1777[2]says, Received a deed of a gift from Mr. Benjamin Sikes of a certain piece of land in order to bury our dead.[2]They voted to give thanks to Mr. Sikes for his benevolence.[2]The cemetery is known as "Old Sikes Cemetery."[2]

Revolutionary War Veteran

Benjamin Sikes served with Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.
Benjamin Sikes was a Private[4]in Captain John Carpenter's Company of guards[4]stationed at Springfield.[4]He enlisted March 16, 1779[4]and was discharged June 16, 1779.[4]

Death and Burial

Benjamin Sikes died August 2, 1781[5]at Ludlow, Massachusetts at the age of 77 years. He was buried at Old Sikes Cemetery, Ludlow, Massachusetts. His grave stone reads,

"Death is a debt
To nature due,
Which I have paid
and so must you."[5]

Benjamin's wife Hannah died April 17, 1790[6]at Ludlow Massachusetts at the age of 84 years. She too was buried at Old Sikes Cemetery, Ludlow, Massachusetts.
