Arthur William Sykes was born in 1879 in Deddington, Oxfordshire, England to John Sykes and Elizabeth (Turvey) Sykes. His birth was registered in Woodstock, Oxfordshire in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Turvey.[1]
In 1881 Auther W Sykes (age 2) lived in Duns Tew, Oxfordshire with his father John (28, Carter Ag Lab), mother Elizabeth (25), and five siblings: Thomas (8, Scholar), George H (7, Scholar), Emma (5, Scholar), Frederick J (4, Scholar), and Sarah E (0).[2]
In 1891 Arthur W Sykes (age 12, Scholar) lived at Twyford Lane in East Adderbury, Oxfordshire with his father John (38, Brick Maker), mother Elizabeth (35), and seven siblings: George Hy (17, Brick Yard Labourer), Emma (15), Frederick (14, Plough Boy), Sarah E (10, Scholar), Ruth (4), Lilian (2), and Edwin (1).[3]
Arthur Sykes was part of the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry by 1896.[4]
[Unable to locate Arthur on the 1901 census - possibly he was overseas with the military.] His son Arthur W S Sykes (0) was listed as "Step Son" in the household of Arthur's parents.
Arthur William Sykes married Bridget McDaid in 1902. The marriage was registered in Headington, Oxfordshire in the last quarter of the year.[5]
Arthur and Bridget had at least three more children: Frederick John Sykes (1903-), James Hugh Sykes (1904-1989), and Elizabeth Sykes (1906-).
Arthur and his family were living in India by 1906, as daughter Elizabeth was born in Ranikhet, India.
In 1911 Arthur Sykes (age 32) was overseas with the 1st Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in Wellington Nilgiris India. His wife Bridget (31) and four children - Arthur (10), John (7), James (6), and Elizabeth (4) - lived with him in India.[6]
Arthur Sykes was still part of the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion, in 1920.[7]
Arthur W Sykes passed away on 7 Dec 1950, aged 71 years. His death was registered in Oxford in the last quarter of the year.[8] "SYKES Arthur William of 73 Horspeth-road Cowley Oxford died 7 December 1950 Administration Oxford 8 January to Bridget Sykes widow. Effects £205 15s. 1d."[9]
