James was born on February 13, 1829 in Adwalton, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised in the Church of England, Chapelry of Drighlington, Birstall Parish, Yorkshire, England on February 15, 1829.[1]. He was the son of John Sykes (abt.1797-abt.1874) and Ann Stell (abt.1796-abt.1841).
James immigrated to Canada via the United States along with his brother Samuel Sykes born January 21, 1821, and his sister Mary Sykes-Wright born May 10, 1823, sometime before 1853.
On April 10, 1853 James married Sarah Ann (Earp) Sykes (abt.1834-1911) in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA and then moved to Canada with his bride. [2]
He passed away on February 25, 1905 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada[3] and was interred on February 28[4] in the family plot, along with his wife Sarah Ann Sykes nee Earp, His youngest son Dr. Frederick Henry Sykes, and his wife Louise Laselle Sykes nee Ryckman, and a child Frederika Sykes aged 1 at time of death.
The family plot is located at Plot X lot 22 of Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. [5]
