James Syme was born on March 19, 1773, in Anstruther, Fifeshire, Scotland, the fifth child and second son of John Syme and Margaret Dick. On September 8, 1793, James married Helen Laidlaw (1772) in Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland. James and Helen were the parents of six children:

The Parish of Anstruther Easter death and burial register entry for James's father, John Syme records that he died on Thursday, January 30, 1783, aged 48. The entry also informs us that John was a sailor on board Royal Charlotte Excife Cutter and died of of the cold and concomitants.
A marriage register entry for the Parish of Barony tells us that on Sunday, September 8, 1793, James Sym and Helen Laddley were proclaimed.
The 8th of September is the proclamation date, so the actual marriage was later.
