Like his brother Peter, James Turpie Syme served with the Cameron Highlanders and was killed a few months later in March 1918. The 6th (Service) Battalion landed at Boulogne-sur-Mer as part of the 45th Brigade in the 15th (Scottish) Division in July 1915 and served on the Western Front for the rest of the war.
