James was born in Galashiels, Scotland on 8 July 1818 to Thomas Symington and Isabella Sommers.[1] The Symington family initially settled in Lambton County, Ontario. James and his family were living in Sarnia, Ontario at the time of the 1861 census.[2] By 1870, they were living in Michigan.[3]
James passed away in Pontiac, Michigan in 1904.[4] James's death was mentioned in the Symington family biographical sketch found in the Commemorative Biographical Record of the County of Lambton.[5]
