Biography

Leslie (Les) Alexander Symington was born in the Cullinan District, Transvaal, on 16 March 1913; he was the son of Henry Benjamin Humphries Symington and Adriana Petronella (Loding) Symington.

Les spent his entire working life in the clothing industry. He was, for many years, a manager at Robert Hamilton's in Pretoria. He later became a Director of A Savelkoul & Co (Pty) Ltd until his retirement.

He was 23 years old when he married 21 year old Winifred Mary Repton in Pretoria, on 27 Feb 1935.^[1]

Two children were born of this marriage:

Henry Benjamin 'Ben' Symington (later Bakker by adoption)

Jean (Symington, later Bakker by adoption) Deveraux

This marriage was already failing when he left to serve in WW II as a Bren Carrier Machine Gunner in the Pretoria Highlanders. The divorce was finalised on 25 Sep 1945.^[2]

After the war he married Lucy Joan Holden on 14 Dec 1946, in Pretoria. He was 33 years old and she was 27; both were in sales.^[3]

Once again the marriage failed and the divorce was finalised on 5 July 1956.^[4]

Later that month he married divorcee Anna Magrietha Elizabeth Maria (Swanepoel) Henderson to whom he stayed married until his death. He was 43 years old and she was 29 when they married in Brits in the Transvaal, on 6 July 1956.^[5]

He died on 17 Mar 1998 in the Pretoria Academic Hospital where he was about to undergo surgery. He was cremated in Pretoria. ^[6]
