Hi again - yup. Different than William Symes-17. His son William was born after 1577, as he was not yet 21 at the time of his father's will (Symes-17 left a will dated/proved 1597).
The profile of this (Symmes-10) William's descendant Zechariah has the info from pages 47-48, Annals of the American pulpit..., by William Buell Sprague, 1795-1876.
That biography says his father (son of this, Symmes-10, William) was ordained 1588. Since an 11-year-old would not have been ordained, then Zachariah's father is not the son of William Symes-17. The inscription seems to imply the father of Zechariah had only two sons - William & Zechariah - while Symes-17 named several sons in his 1597 will (no Zechariah though), which means that Symes-17 wasn't the father either.
Hi Liz, thanks for this info... am I correct in the understanding that Elizabeth Maria Hill (Hill-226) is not actually the grandmother of Zachariah (Symmes-7)? If so, she is still listed as such, so is there anyone that can remove her?
this bio, of Zechariah Symmes (born Canterbury, 1599), son of Rev. William (ordained 1588)/brother of William, quotes an inscription by his (Zechariah's) father Rev. William: "I note it is a special mercy... that both my father and mother were favourers of the Gospel, and hated idolatry under Queen Mary's persecution. And I charge my sons, Zachariah and William,..."
So - I'm thinking that this Symmes, b 1544, is the one ordained 1588, and had two sons, William and Zechariah (the inscription isn't dated, but Symes-17 died 1597, leaving a will that named lots of children - no Zechariah, and William not yet 21).
David - I'm having second thoughts about this profile and Symes-17 being the same person. From what I can tell, the Symes-17 family was Somerset (the c1544, Sandwich, Kent birth info for Symes-17 was apparently borrowed from this William - I can't find documentation for either birth).
The main reason I think they're different, though, is I think they're different religions... I haven't found anything to show that Symes-17 or his son John was a recusant, but it seems that William Symmes-10 (father of Rev. William) was.
I'm not having much luck researching this... so far, I've only found that maybe I should be looking for Puritans? (See this HOP page.)
