He grew up living with his parents and siblings at 7 Sanborn Street in Winchester. He graduated from Winchester High School in 1917, and attended Williams College. He served in the United States Navy during World War I. By 1920, at the age of 20, he was working for his father as a "Teamster" delivering milk products for the family dairy business.[2][3][4][5][6]

On September 3, 1927, he married, in Winchester, Massachusetts, Flora Elizabeth Whitney Hawkes, of Rockland, Massachusetts, daughter of Clinton Augustus and Flora Adelia (Hawkes) Hawkes, of Charlemont, Massachusetts. The wedding was held at the home of Russell's sister, Mrs. Walter P. Keyes, 39 Lloyd Street. The ceremony was performed by Rev. John G. Lovell of Chelmsford at 3 o'clock. Following their wedding, they initially settled in Nashua, New Hampshire, where their first three daughters were born, but by 1934, they had returned to Winchester so Russell could help his father tend his farm. They had nine children:[2][3][6][7][8]

When they were living in Nashua, New Hampshire, Russell had been the New Hampshire representative for a New York bond house, a trade he may have picked up from his half-brother Laurence, who also worked at a Bond House. But in 1934, he moved his family back to Winchester so he could run Symmes Farm Dairy for his father, Samuel Stowell Symmes. The farm was on a part of the original 300-acre tract that had been deeded to the Rev. Zechariah Symmes by the town of Charlestown in the mid-1600s. Russell's family were originally living in a house at 9 Sanborn Street in Winchester, right next to the house of his father, but by 1941, the growing family needed more space, so they moved into a larger house. That house was located at 233 Main Street at Symmes Corner, in Winchester, and coincidentally, was the same house once owned by his grandfather Marshall Symmes, Jr. When his father died in 1946, he inherited the farm and continued to run it until his retirement.[6][11][7][8]
Russell and his wife retired to Winter Park, Florida, in 1961, where Russell's favorite leisure activity was playing golf. He was known to play 36 holes of golf on some days. He was a member of the Winchester Rotary Club and continued in the Rotary after moving to Florida. He was also a member of the "Three-Score-And-Ten", Pinehurst, North Carolina, and the Winter Park Country Club.[2]
For many years Russell and Elizabeth crisscrossed the country in their car in order to visit family, who by then were inhabiting quite a diverse collection of states ranging from Massachusetts to Florida, and New Jersey to California.
