Biography

"Anna and John Syndergaard had five children born in Denmark. before they immigrated to the USA in 1872 on the passenger steamer Thuringia, from Hamburg, Germany to New York, arriving March 25, 1872. Two of the children had died as infants, and the oldest daughter was left in Denmark. The passenger list identifies Johann and family:

238 Johann Sondergaard 32 male farmer, Denmark 239 Anna Sondergaard 33 female his wife Denmark 240 Anna Sondergaard 5 female his child Denmark 241 Christine Sondergaard 11m female his baby Denmark (this is Nielssine Christine)

The ages of the children weren't quite right, maybe they were fudged to get cheaper tickets.

At the time of the 1880 Census, they are in Cedar Falls, 1st Ward in Black Hawk County, where John is shown as a Laborer. They have four children with them; Christine (Stina) 10, Peter, 8, Christian, 5, and Antone, 10M. Their oldest child, Inger Kirstine was still in Denmark; there are records of her marriage there in 1881 when she was 17, and of the birth of her first child there 4 months later. Their second child Anna immigrated to the USA with them but is not in the 1880 census, have not found a death record either.

At the time of the 1900 US Census John and Anna were farming in Grundy County, IA; they owned their farm but with a mortgage. They also indicated that Anna had 10 children and 4 were living with them at the time. They are: Niels, Anton, Inger Kirstine and Nielssine Christine.

In 1910 and 1920 John was lliving with his son Chris."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
