Alajos Szokolyi was born on June 19, 1871 in Hungary. He was the son of Jozsef Szokolyi and Emilia Holub. As a child, Alajos excelled in gymnastics. It wasn't until he joined the Magyar Athletika Club in Budapest in 1889 that he became involved in running. He won his first race in 1890 in the 100 meter dash. [1]

Alajos competed at the 1896 Olympics Games in Athens, Greece. He was entered in the 100 meter dash, triple jump and 110 meter hurdles. Alajos took third place in the 100 meter dash and 4th place in the triple jump. [2] The 110 meter hurdles were his strongest event, and he was expected to do well. However, he was unable to compete in the final due to controversial circumstances pertaining to the way the heats were run and who qualified for the finals. [3]

Alajos retired in 1900 and returned to Bernece. He married Charlotte Berchtold on November 27, 1900 and they had 5 children together; three sons (Jozsef, Alajos and Ferenc) and two daughters (Erzsebet and Maria).[4]
