Biography

In 1747, around age 29, Joseph married Elizabeth _______ somewhere in England.

The authorative genealogy book, Early Pleasant River Families of Washington County, Maine, by Leonard F. Tibbetts and Darryl B. Lamson, lists Elizabeth as having an unknown maiden name. Joseph, is listed in the book under the name Tebbut. This family name developed over time to Tibbett, Tabbutt, and other assorted variations. The following information was taken from pages 531-32 of the book.

"Joseph Tebbut, b in Wales; d at Addison before 25 Sep 1804 [when his widow relinquished admin. of his estate]; came from London, England, to Falmouth, Maine, c1755 with a family of 5 sons {3 of whom later drowned] and 3 daus [papers of Enoch Lincoln Tabbutt]; served with Capt. James Mill'Co. of Militia at Falmouth in 1757; settled between 1764 {when he was listed among grantees for land east of Union River} and 1769 {when he was a member of the Subscriber's Committee that accepted Daniel Merritt's layout of lots at Pleasant River} at "Moose Neck" {South Addison} [PR 17778-84, ADD 1790 and 1800 w/family of son William]; m in England or Wales perhaps c1740 [if there were 8 children by 1755] ELIZABETH __, b in England or Wales 1720's; d at Addison 1804+; at least 12 children [only 5 names are known]:..."

1. Joseph Tabbutt, Jr. was born in London(?), England 1748-1833. (Pg 532)

2. Jemima was born in Cape Elizabeth, Maine in 1758 and died during the 1840's. She was married in the 1780's to Eliphalet Reynolds.

3. Mary "Polly" followed c.1762 died 1845. She was married in the 1780's to Thomas Mansfield.

4. Elizabeth "Betsy", was born in 1765 and died at Machiasport 3 June 1856, ae. 91; She married at Machias, 6 Nov 1796, John Day, Jr.

5. William Tabbutt was born c.1768 and died during the 1840's. (Pg 533)

Both Joseph and Elizabeth Tebbut/Tabbut died in Addison.
