Thomas Taberer was a Virginia colonist.

John Taberer,[1] son of William Taberer and Ann Bennett, was born between 1616 and 1624 in England.[citation needed]

He was transported to Gloucester County, Virginia, by Peter Knight before 1652. A grant of 700 acres was recorded by Mr. Peter Knight on 25 August 1652 for transport of 14 persons including Tho. Taberer.[2]

Also in August 1652 Thomas Taberer recorded patents, jointly with partners, for a total of 1,150 acres in Isle of Wight County:

  • Nicho. George, Thomas Taberer & Humphry Clarke, 900 acs., Aug. 14, 1652, p. 205. Beg. at the mouth on N. side of a branch where Francis England's land endeth, &c. cross the branch &c. to the great swamp, being the first branch of the black water, etc. Trans, of 18 pers: [incl. Joshua Taberer, brother of Thomas][2] This land was later sold to Francis Ayres on 28 February 1656.[3]
  • Thomas Taberer & Francis Higgins, 240 acs. Isle of Wight Cr., on head of the first swamp of blackwater, beg. at marked trees of Christopher Lewis; etc. 14 Aug. 1652, p. 206. Trans. of 5 pers.[2]
  • Thomas Taberer purchased 300 acres in Isle of Wight County called "Basses's Choice" from John Bland before 1690 who purchased it from Peter Knight about 1640.[4]

Thomas is named in the will of his brother, Joshua Taberer, date 24 November 1656.

To brother Thomas Taberer all houses and lands left me by last will and test. of my father William Taberer of the county of Derby, he my brother giving a legacy to my brother William Taberer of Derby and the rest of my fathers kindred of ten pounds sterling * * in England. After my brother Thomas' decease, his only dau. and heir Ruth Taberer to be possessed with all my said estate in England as my only heir and executrix forever. To my cousin Ruth Taberer all my female cattle and rest of my estate in Va. To my Brother Thomas full power to recover my estate in England. Test, William Lewer, Francis Higgins.[5]

Thomas Taberer/Tabenor was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses from Isle of Wight County in 1658[6] and 1680-82,[7] and for a long time was one of the justices and a major of the militia. He sympathized with, and may have been, a Quaker.[8] The births of his children, Christian and Elizabeth, with wife Margaret Womble were recorded in the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy.[9]

Marriages & Children

Thomas Taberer married his first wife about 1654 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. No marriage record has been found. Some online family trees state his wife was Ann Bennett, but there is no documentation for the name. They may have confused Thomas' mother, Ann Bennett, with his first wife. They had only one known daughter, Ruth Taberer, born about 1655.

Thomas married second, Margaret (Womble) Taberer, widow of John Wood, about 1660 in Isle of Wight County. They had children:[9]

  1. Christian Taberer, b 1661
  2. Elizabeth Taberer, b 1663
  3. Mary Taberer, b c 1777 [?]

Taberer-28 and Taberer-2 appear to represent the same person because: they share the same daughter, Christian Taberer.

Perhaps both Anne Bennett's existed? We need more sources and though in my direct line, I have limited info.

I just merged and adopted Bennett-2203 for starters

My ignorance is showing! Can someone more knowledgeable about this family determine whether Thomas' MOTHER AND FIRST WIFE were both named "Anne Bennett"? Both profiles are orphaned. Or someone can point me in the right direction and I would be glad to fix/update/source the profiles. Thank you!
